THE ASPEN WRITERS' FOUNDATION SCORES A HAT TRICK WITH THREE BESTSELLERS

(January 14, 2006) Aspen, CO … The Aspen Writers' Foundation will score a hat trick this week when three of its Winter Words authors appear on this Sunday's New York Times bestseller lists, two in the coveted number one positions. Winter Words is the organization's ninth annual series of readings and talks with notable authors, appearing in Aspen January through March 2006.

In the venerable paper's lists that will be published on December 18, James Patterson leads the Hardback Fiction list with Mary, Mary which debuted at #1, making the title Patterson's fifth #1 bestseller in 2005 alone — a record. Remarkably, his last 17 consecutive titles have all been #1 bestsellers as well. He will appear in Aspen on March 18 at the Wheeler Opera House.

Frank McCourt tops the Hardback Nonfiction list with Teacher Man, the memoir that chronicles the three decades he spent as a teacher in New York's public schools. The book, which so far has enjoyed three weeks on the roster, is the second sequel to his Pulitzer Prize-winning debut memoir that spent 117 weeks on the New York Times hardcover bestseller list and became the #1 Nonfiction Book of the Year for both Time and Newsweek. McCourt's reading and talk will take place on January 28 at the Wheeler Opera House.

Finally, Ann Patchett's Truth & Beauty is holding its own on the Paperback Nonfiction list. With multiple weeks on the list, the memoir is now at #34. Patchett, award-winning author of the novels Bel Canto, The Magician's Assistant, The Patron Saint of Liars and Taft, has gracefully crossed genres with Truth & Beauty, her first memoir. Having made her Aspen debut at the 2003 Aspen Summer Words Literary Festival, she returns on February 15 for a reading and talk at the Given Institute.

The other Winter Words authors, all alumni of the New York Times bestseller lists themselves, are: Charles C. Mann (January 20), Lorraine Adams (February 23), and Kent Haruf (March 4). Their presentations take place at the Given Institute.

Tickets and season subscriptions are available at the Wheeler Box Office. New this year, the literary outfit is offering discounts for students and educators, as they always do for members, which are available by contacting the Aspen Writers' Foundation offices at 925.3122.
