ASPEN SUMMER WORDS
Meeting Tips

WHAT TO EXPECT
If you have participated in the lottery and been assigned meetings, the agent/editor with whom you meet will be familiar with your manuscript, having received it in advance of your meeting. You can expect to receive feedback on your manuscript (unless you missed the lottery). You should not expect to be signed by an agent — though it has happened!

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR MEETING
Go into your meeting prepared with questions.
For example, you might ask:
•  Is my manuscript developed enough to receive consideration in the marketplace?
If not, what suggestions do you have?
•  Do you have any recommended next steps for me?

Do your homework.
Carefully review the bios of the agents/editors and try to choose those who are an appropriate fit for your work. It may be that your chances for publication are enhanced by meeting with a professional who is from a smaller organization than from a larger firm. If possible, read a selection of work by authors represented by the agents/editors. This will help you to understand the genres and markets in which they work.

Think positively.
The meetings are a great opportunity for direct access to publishing professionals. Individuals who get the most value out of the meetings see them as learning opportunities and information gathering sessions, rather than their “big break.”

Make contacts.
Through these meetings you will have the chance to make valuable contacts in the publishing industry, which may serve you now or in the future. If the agent/editor with whom you meet isn’t right for you, they may know someone who is the right fit.
