How To Apply

“There are writers' festivals all over the world but the Aspen Writers’ Foundation is special. There is such a richness and variety in the events offered you will hardly know where to begin, but whatever you choose you will know you are partaking of the best.”
— Frank McCourt,
Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Angela’s Ashes

Writing Retreat at the Gant in AspenNow celebrating its 32nd year, Aspen Summer Words is a pioneering writing retreat featuring hands-on instruction with some of today’s most celebrated authors and educators. What sets this writers’ conference apart is simple: the Aspen Writers’ Foundation helps writers develop their craft by providing a winning combination of inspiration, knowledge and opportunity. And this triple whammy takes place in the world-class, small town of Aspen — a backdrop that has all the beauty of a national park and, during Aspen Summer Words, all the charm of your favorite bookstore.

Creating a Literary Community
Suddenly your world as a writer — and goodness knows that world can be a pretty lonely place — will become a whole lot more friendly. Aspen Summer Words is a community that supports and engages writers. You will be among aspiring and established writers who share a kinship for the written word, and who happen to know you by name. With the Writing Retreat’s welcoming staff, intimate workshops, convivial gatherings and direct access to authors, it’s easy to envision your road to becoming an author. Think of Aspen Summer Words as the map.

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN WORDS
Our finely tuned Retreat offers six ways to dive into words:

1.   Juried Workshops
Ideal for students seeking intensive instruction and individualized critique to polish a manuscript they have in development. Daily writing exercises, reading assignments and discussion of student work are the basis for the classes. A writing sample is required for admission.

2. Five-Day Intro Workshops
Our introductory offerings have been expanded to include two workshops for novice or experienced writers of all ages who wish to get their feet wet in the world of writing: Beginning Fiction for adults and the new Young Writers Workshop for teens. No writing sample is required for admission.

3. Two-Day Symposia
The perfect “how to” writing courses, providing new skills, publishing advice and resources to freelance writers of all levels — from the novice seeking a leg up to the professional wishing to brush up. No writing sample is required.

4. Readers’ Retreat
This literature appreciation class, designed for both readers and writers who wish to stoke the fires of inspiration and broaden their literary knowledge through the discussion of influential works, emphasizes a compact reading list and an expansive amount of time for discussion.

5. Literary Festival
This concurrent five-day literary festival — which takes place in the afternoons and evenings — features an abundance of events for those who love all things literary, such as author readings and talks. It’s perfect for readers, writers and the travel companions of Writing Retreat students.

6. Professional Consultations
A writer’s favorite, these private meetings with guest editors and agents off the chance to pitch an idea, receive feedback on a manuscript and network with professionals from the top publishing houses and literary agencies in the country.

A Conference of Distinction
No matter which route you select, you can count on the Aspen Summer Words educational programs to provide outstanding instruction from faculty who are as highly regarded for their writing as for their teaching; an intimate learning environment (writing classes are limited to 12 students); and above all, a safe and nurturing setting for sharing your work. As our returning alumni and faculty members will tell you, Aspen Summer Words is the ideal venue for discovering your voice and your craft.
